Breast Reduction Glasgow

Breast reduction surgery at McKeown Medical in Glasgow is designed to reshape and lighten the breasts by carefully removing excess tissue and skin. The procedure reduces overall volume while refining the breast contour and lifting the surrounding skin to create a balanced, naturally youthful silhouette that complements your body shape. The procedure typically alleviates the back and neck pain that are often associated with enlarged breasts.

    BREAST REDUCTION GLASGOW

At McKeown Medical in Glasgow, breast reduction surgery is performed in our 5 star luxury facility to lighten, lift and refine the breasts so they feel more proportionate to your frame. By removing excess tissue and skin, we reduce volume, reshape the breast mound and elevate the nipple–areola complex to achieve a balanced, naturally youthful silhouette.

    Your consultation

In your initial appointment, Dr Kavita will explore your goals in detail — including the degree of volume reduction, desired breast shape, and nipple position. She will also discuss options for scar patterns, recovery, and what results are realistically achievable for your body. Being a woman herself, Kavita has an intuitive understanding of what women want when it comes to their bodies and she will guide you to the most appropriate procedure – or combination of procedures – to achieve your goals.

    Typical goals

Many patients choose a moderate reduction combined with a lift, aiming for a softer, perkier contour that looks and feels more comfortable in everyday life. For those with very large breasts, associated symptoms such as back, neck or shoulder pain, the pain as well as bra-strap grooving and skin irritation often improve after surgery.

Before and After: Following Breast Reduction Treatment

    Surgical Technique and Scar Options

There are several techniques available for breast reduction surgery, and the choice of approach depends on the size and shape of your breasts, the degree of reduction desired, and your individual anatomy. In most cases, we use what’s known as the anchor-shaped technique (also called the “inverted-T” or “Wise pattern” reduction).

This method involves making an incision around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and then along the natural fold beneath the breast — creating an anchor-shaped pattern. This approach allows your surgeon to remove the right amount of tissue and skin while reshaping and lifting the breast to achieve a smooth, natural contour. The resulting scars usually fade significantly over time and can be easily hidden beneath most bras or swimwear.

In smaller reductions or where less lifting is required, alternative techniques may be used, such as a vertical (lollipop) incision or, more rarely, a periareolar (donut) incision, which limits scarring to around the areola. Your surgeon will advise which approach best suits your goals and anatomy.

Before and After: Following Breast Reduction Treatment

    Breast Reduction Under Sedation

At McKeown Medical, breast reduction surgery is performed under intravenous (IV) sedation with local anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be asleep and entirely unaware throughout the procedure, but without the need for a full general anaesthetic. This modern approach — supervised at all times by a Consultant Anaesthetist — allows a smoother, faster recovery, with fewer side effects such as grogginess or nausea.

The procedure typically takes between two and three hours, depending on complexity. After removing the planned amount of breast tissue and reshaping the remaining tissue into a natural contour, the skin is redraped and the incisions are carefully closed with fine sutures. A light dressing is applied, and most patients are comfortable enough to return home just an hour or so later once they’ve recovered from sedation.

    What to Expect Before Surgery

From the moment you enquire about breast reduction surgery, our team is here to guide you through every step of the process.

Your journey begins with an initial conversation with one of our Patient Relationship Managers (PRMs), who will answer your first questions, outline the treatment pathway, and help you prepare for your consultation.

You’ll then meet Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr Kavita Sharma for a detailed discussion about your goals, medical history, and expectations. During this consultation, Dr Sharma will assess your anatomy, talk you through surgical options and likely outcomes, and ensure you have a clear understanding of the benefits, limitations, and recovery process.

After your appointment, you’ll receive a written summary report from the consultation, including a tailored surgical plan and quotation. A second consultation is always available — and included in the price — should you wish to review your options or discuss any aspect of the plan in more detail.

Before your surgery date, one of our nurses will complete a pre-assessment call, confirming your medical history, medications, and readiness for surgery. Finally, our Consultant Anaesthetist will review your case and personally double-check all details to ensure you are fully prepared and safe to proceed.

    After Surgery

Following your breast reduction, you’ll rest in our recovery suite until you are fully awake and comfortable. Once discharged, you’ll go home with a responsible adult who can stay with you overnight.

The day after your procedure, our nurse will call you to check how you’re feeling, review pain control, and answer any immediate questions. A wound check appointment will take place in the clinic around one week later, where your dressings will be assessed and any early healing concerns addressed.

You’ll then see Dr Sharma in person for follow-up reviews at six weeks and twelve weeks post-surgery, with additional appointments arranged if needed — all included as part of your comprehensive aftercare package.

Our focus is on ensuring your comfort, safety and confidence at every stage — from your first enquiry to your final results.
