What can help?

Often the best treatment plan for each patient will involve multiple different treatment options usually performed over a period of time, with each stage achieving incremental improvements.

For example, if a scar is red or pink in appearance we will often start the treatment plan by using a vascular laser to reduce the redness. If the scar is raised, then it may require a fractional ablative laser to help reduce the tissue and make it flatter. If a scar is white or stretched then again it may require the use of a fractional ablative laser to encourage the formation of more normal looking tissue. If the scar is indented, then it may require some filler injections to make the contour of the tissues more flat. Most scars have more than one of these characteristics, for example it may be red and raised, which is why they normally require combination treatments and usually multiple sessions are required. Occasionally, the best option for a scar is to simply cut it out and start again as in a surgical scar revision followed up by a course of laser to optimise wound healing.

Because scar treatment is so diverse, each patient and scar requires an initial consultation to establish what the characteristics of the scar are and what the best way of dealing with it may be. Although we can never remove scars completely, we can usually achieve a significant improvement for most patients that makes the scar less visible and less bothersome for them.

Common Questions

Which anaesthetic is used?

Most scar revision procedures are performed either with the use of numbing cream or local anaesthetic to reduce the discomfort of treatment.

What is the downtime?

The downtime will vary depending on the type of treatment you had. If you have an ablative treatment, then you can expect the treatment area to look red and slightly swollen for 5-7 days. If you’ve had a surgical scar revision then you will likely have stitches that need to be removed in 5-7 days. If you have had a non-ablative treatment (for example for redness) or a filler injection for an indented scar, then you will typically be able to get back to normal activities immediately after treatment.

When will I see results?

Results from scar treatment take time. Typically, multiple sessions of treatment are required – usually every month for 3 – 6 months. The best result will usually be visible around 3 – 6 months after your final treatment session.
