Frown lines

Frown lines are caused by the repetitive action of a group of muscles known as the glabella muscles. Eventually, over-use of these muscles leads to breakdown of collagen in the skin, and the formation of ever-deepening creases between the brows. More frustrating, however, is that they are often associated with negative facial expressions – perhaps one of anger or worry – and this can be upsetting to some patients who feel that their face no longer reflects their true state of emotion.

What can help?

In the earlier stages of frown line formation (where the lines are present on expression, but mostly disappear when the face relaxes) they can be often be successfully treated by relaxing the muscle with injectable treatments. The objective is to relax the muscle, which reduces the tension on the skin and makes the lines look somewhat softer.

In cases where lines are deeper

When frown lines have been present for a long time, and the lines have become “static” (in other words, they remain visible even when the face is not moving) – then muscle relaxing injections on their own may not be enough. In these cases, we often combine small amounts of hyaluronic acid-based filler with muscle relaxants to create a smoother, cleaner appearance. Consultations for treatment of frown lines are carried out by all of our non-surgical doctors: including Dr Darren McKeown and Dr Rhona Cameron.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

Many people are anxious about muscle relaxing injections, for fear of ending up with a “frozen” face – and this is where our extensive experience comes in. Correctly administered treatment should result in a harmonious balance of facial muscles that improves the overall appearance and condition of the skin – while still allowing your natural expression and character to shine through.

Which anaesthetic is used?

Frown line treatment does not require the use of anaesthetic. When injecting, we use only the finest-gauge needles and take care to change these regularly, therefore eliminating discomfort and potential bruising.

What's the downtime?

There is little to no downtime with frown line treatment. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment, though applying makeup is not advised until the following day.

When will I see results?

The results of frown line treatment can take up to two weeks to become apparent. The effects will typically last between three to four months, before a repeat treatment is required. Typically, most people opt to have treatment two to three times per year, and they often try to coincide treatment dates with big events, such as birthdays of Christmas. Because of the apparent long-term benefits of repetitive treatments, we usually find that filler is only ever required at the first treatment. It is rare to repeat use of filler in this area, so long as the muscles remain relaxed.
