Dark circles under eyes

Dark circles can often be blamed on genetics. While some Indian and Asian skin types are predisposed to hyperpigmentation – especially around the eyes – Caucasian skins are also susceptible. This is as a result of having thinner skin, which can allow the underlying muscle to shine through – and there is little that can be done to change this. However, dark circles are also exacerbated by natural weakness of the bone structure beneath the eye, or volume loss associated with ageing, which can create a hollow and shadowing. Fortunately, this aspect of the dark circle can usually be improved.

What can help?

Dermal filler offers a quick and effective remedy to many cases of dark circles. It works by smoothing deep tear troughs and therefore reducing the shadow created by the hollow, making the under-eye area appear lighter. If the skin is pigmented, BBL or topical hydroquinone can also help to lighten the under-eye area.

Patient Testimonials

Listen to one of our patients who attended for tear trough filler. The tear trough is the hollow that develops at the junction between the lower eyelid and the cheek. Some people are born with this and it can create a tired appearance, even from a young age.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

By correcting the under-eye contour, and replacing lost volume, the recessed tear trough is no longer able to cast a shadow. This transforms the eye area, and enables light to bounce off of it more easily – thus reducing the look of tiredness and fatigue.

Which anaesthetic is used?

We use dermal fillers, specifically formulated for the eye area, which contain a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, to reduce discomfort. Topical numbing cream is also an option for anxious patients undergoing dermal fillers.

What's the downtime?

Following tear trough filler, the under-eye area may feel sore and look slightly swollen; however this has normally disappeared within a few days. You will be able to resume your normal activities by the following day. If bruising does occur, it is usually easily covered with post-procedure makeup – though we advise waiting 24 hours to do this.

When will I see results?

The effect of the tear trough filler is instant: the under-eye area is smooth and bright, and the upper face looks noticeably more rested. The result will improve as the filler integrates with the tissue over the first two weeks after treatment.
