Long lip

As we age, one of the more subtle signs of ageing is lengthening of the upper lip. That’s right, as we get older, out top lip gets longer which means you see less of our teeth when we speak. It’s a very subtle sign of ageing, but correcting it can have a dramatic impact on the perception of facial ageing – creating a more youthful mouth area, particularly when speaking or smiling. As well as being an issue that affects older people, this can also be a feature that some of us are born with and correcting it can have a positive impact on facial aesthetics; creating a happier, friendlier appearance.

How is it treated?

The lip lift is performed by creating an incision around the base of the nose and removing a strip of skin below the nose. The surgeon then anchors the deeper tissues to the base of the nose, elevating the position of the lip so that there is more tooth show both at rest and on animation. The wound is then closed with some very fine sutures, resulting in a fine scar that is hidden in the crease around the base of the nose. Initially the scar will look a little red, although it can be easily hidden with some make up until it fades over time.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

The main benefit is the restoration of tooth show, so that the mouth area looks more youthful both when your face is at rest and when you are talking to people. You will also be able to see more of your top teeth when you smile, and the lip can look a little fuller because there is more eversion of the upper lip.

Which anaesthetic is used?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, similar to what you get at the dentist. First, the doctor injects some numbing medicine to make the tissues numb so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure.

When will I see results?

You will be able to see that the lip looks shorter and usually improved tooth show immediately after surgery. However, the lip will be very swollen initially and it will take around 7-10 days for the initial swelling to go down. After that, it can take a further 3 or 4 months for the final residual swelling to settle for you to appreciate the final results.
