Mummy tummy

The Mummy Tummy can be difficult to shift. Sometimes it manifests in stubborn fat that refuses to budge, no matter how much exercise you take; it might be a C-section scar that’s causing skin retraction and an overhang that was never previously there. While pregnancy leads to numerous physical changes within your body, nowhere are these more apparent than the belly and waist. Despite your body’s extraordinary ability to bring another life into this world, these changes can still lead to a lack of self-esteem and discomfort surrounding your abdomen – however, help is at hand.

What can help?

CoolSculpting is an effective, non-surgical solution to improving the appearance of the Mummy Tummy. It works by freezing, and therefore destroying, the fat cells (a process referred to as apoptosis or “cell death”), which are then eliminated via the body’s lymphatic system – and once gone, the fat cells do not return

More about CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a completely non-invasive treatment, that does not penetrate the skin. Instead, a protective membrane is applied to the skin and then a specially contoured applicator is attached that freezes the tissues. Each applicator is approximately the size of the palm of your hand, and we refer to each application as ‘one treatment cycle’. Typically, most tummies will need 2-4 cycles of treatment to cover the whole area. It can be more than this if you chose to also treat the flanks or love handles too. After the treatment, the area will feel numb and a little swollen for a few days. It will typically take up to 12 weeks to see the full results, although most people can appreciate an improvement after about four weeks.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

Our tailor-made CoolSculpting plans enable us to define a tidy waistline and shape the lower abdomen – and we use a variety of different-shaped applicators, which allow us to follow the body’s natural contours. Though the primary function of CoolSculpting is to refine the silhouette, it also has a mild skin tightening effect – a combination that also assists in smoothing the overhang that can be caused by a Caesarean scar.

Which anaesthetic is used?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive body contouring treatment, and therefore requires no anaesthetic. A cold gel pad will be applied to the area to be treated, ensuring that skin is protected from the extreme cold; however, once the treatment begins, the area quickly becomes numb – so any sensation is minimal.

What's the downtime?

There is very little downtime with CoolSculpting, and most patients are ready to resume their normal activities straight after treatment. Some might experience tingling, redness or slight bruising in the area treated; however, this is normal and usually subsides in the following weeks.

When will I see results?

The full effects of CoolSculpting take up to three months to be seen – the time taken for the body to eliminate the fat cells – however, some patients notice a reduction in stubborn fat pockets even sooner. While the fat cells cannot return to the treated area, it is important that you maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle – for a sustainable, and long-lasting result.
