Nose to mouth lines

Many patients who come to see us in the clinic are concerned by their laughter lines, or “nose-to-mouth” lines. These lines are the result of volume loss and bone resorption in the mid-face, resulting in a lack of support in the nose-to-mouth area. Though it is entirely natural to see creasing in this area of the face – and eliminating it entirely can look odd – deep nose-to-mouth lines can impart a sense of heaviness to the face while making the cheeks look saggy. However, there are solutions.

What can help?

Many people erroneously believe that a facelift will remove the nose to mouth lines. However, that’s not the case. A facelift removes excess tissues from areas of excess in the face, but does not replace the loss of volume that is the underlying cause of nose to mouth lines.

The most advanced way to reduce the appearance of these folds is with dermal filler. Occasionally it can be as simple as injecting directly into the fold. More frequently however it is necessary to correct the underlying volume loss in the cheek, with or without additional volume in the fold itself. The goal of treatment is to create a rested appearance both when the face is at rest, and in animation.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

Our expert aesthetic doctors are highly skilled at assessing the face and injecting strategically: to support the areas of the face where volume depletion is most noticeable, in particular to the lateral cheek area and mid face. By strengthening these areas, we can reinforce the natural scaffolding of the face: helping to lift fallen tissues, smooth deep nose-to-mouth lines, and create a more feminine face shape.

Which anaesthetic is used?

We use dermal fillers which contain a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps to reduce discomfort – while use of a topical numbing cream can be of benefit for patients who are anxious.

What's the downtime?

Post-procedure, you may see a bit of swelling and the area will feel tender – however this has normally lessened by the next day. Most patients who have dermal filler are back to their normal routine the same day. If bruising does occur, it is easily covered with post-procedure makeup – though this should not be applied until the day following treatment. We also encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure, to keep any swelling to a minimum.

When will I see results?

Straight away. Reinforcing the underlying facial structure means the skin is instantly lifted: nose-to-mouth lines appear softer and the face looks less tired. However, the best results are to be seen in two weeks’ time, when the filler has fully integrated with the tissue and the face has settled.
