Sagging neck

For many, a sagging neck is an inevitability. This is because the skin on the neck is some of the thinnest on the entire body, with less sebaceous glands than the face; while excessive movement – for example, looking down at digital devices, can often result in the dreaded “tech neck”. A sagging neck can appear even more noticeable in those patients who have maintained a good quality skin and facial scaffolding through topical ingredients, injectables and energy-based devices – making the concern even more pronounced. In all cases, it is critical to determine the root cause of a sagging neck, in order to prescribe the adequate treatment.

What can help?

The gold standard way of improving the neck is a surgical neck lift procedure. Whilst non-surgical treatments are very effective in the face and can work wonders from the jawline up, the same cannot be said unfortunately about non-surgical treatments for the neck. We were the first clinic in Scotland – and to date the only clinic in Scotland – to offer the Deep Plane Face and Neck lift procedure. This procedure involves going deeper under the muscles of the face to release retaining ligaments and truly reposition the soft tissues of the face – rather than simply to pull them a bit tighter, like in a standard facelift. The reason we offer this procedure is that it produces the most natural, effective and long lasting outcomes.

Non-surgical treatments

If you do not feel that you are ready for surgery yet, there are non-surgical options that you can try. If you have loss of volume around the chin and jawline, then correcting this with filler injections can lead to some improvement in the appearance of the neck like in the examples shown here. Likewise, if you have skin texture issues – like fine lines and wrinkles – these can also be improved by using laser, like the Halo laser.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

By improving the underlying structures of the neck, and addressing the suboptimal soft tissues, we are able to effectively correct the appearance of a sagging neck, while also reinstating a smoother-looking canvas. However, while we can address a sagging neck via both surgical and non-surgical options, it must be noted that the results of non-surgical treatments in the neck are more modest when compared with their effectiveness on the face.

Which anaesthetic is used?

Injectables typically do not require the use of anaesthetic – although for very sensitive patients, a topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand.

The neck lift procedure is performed either under local anaesthetic or sedation – avoiding the complications related to general anaesthetic, while enhancing recovery.

What's the downtime?

There is little to no downtime with wrinkle relaxing injections.

With a surgical procedure most patients require a couple of weeks off work following the procedure – to allow the immediate signs of surgery to settle. Non-invasive options typically do not require any downtime.

When will I see results?

The results of wrinkle relaxing injections take up to one week to become apparent, with effects typically lasting between three to six months, before a repeat treatment is required.

The results of surgery can be seen immediately, although it’s difficult to appreciate the improvement initially because of bruising and swelling. Typically most patients start to feel better about the appearance of their neck after a couple of weeks, although the results continue to improve for up to six months.
