RESTORE LOST VOLUME TO AGEING, TIRED EYES
To understand how non-surgical rejuvenation using dermal fillers works around the eye area, it is first necessary to understand why the eye area ages in the first place. In the past, we assumed it was simply due to gravity causing the tissues to fall and sag. We now understand, however, that ageing is much more complicated than that and age-related changes in appearance are primarily related to loss of volume beneath the skin.
The bone below the eye – known as the infraorbital rim – shrinks (or, to give it its proper medical name, ‘atrophies’) with age. When this happens, the fat pad beneath the eye can bulge forward, creating the appearance of an eye bag and dark circles under the eyes.
Because of this evolution in our understanding of why the eye ages, our treatment of the problem has also evolved – moving away from radical surgery that involves cutting away the ‘excess’ fat towards less invasive volume restoration treatments, such as tear trough fillers.

How Do Tear Trough Fillers Work?
Under-eye fillers involve carrying out a series of small injections into the skin below the eye – usually on top of the bone – using hyaluronic acid injections. These hollows are called tear troughs.
Injected into the hollows of your eyes, tear trough fillers can make you look less tired by reducing dark circles, lines and wrinkles, and restoring lost volume to the skin.
The restoration of volume on top of the bone using dermal fillers restores some of the lost support to the lower eyelid and can improve the contour of the eyelid.
To carry out the injection we sometimes use a traditional needle, whilst other times we will use a blunt-tipped cannula. The choice of instrument depends on your own anatomy and what will get the best result for you as an individual. The procedure typically requires more than one injection.
It is necessary to undercorrect slightly in anticipation that the dermal fillers will expand a little following treatment, so it can take up to a couple of weeks to get to see the final result.
Filler treatments can be done during a lunch break, so you can be back to work the same day, which makes it a popular facial aesthetics treatment for the skin.

Who is Best Suited for Filler Treatments?
The treatment typically works best on younger patients, usually under the age of 55. Beyond this age group, the treatment can still be performed, but the results are often more limited.
Dermal fillers for tear troughs are ideal for patients wanting to treat dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles, and eye bags that cause the appearance of tired eyes.

Are There Any Limitations to the Procedure?
Tear trough fillers are very effective at restoring volume-related changes to the skin around the eye.
It cannot however remove excess skin or discolouration in the skin, which may also contribute to an ageing or tired appearance.
To treat these, laser treatment or eye bag removal surgery may be required.

How Long Do Filler Treatments Last?
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers give you natural-looking results that can last between 9-12 months. In the lower eyelid, however, a dermal filler treatment tends to last much longer than 12 months, with several years duration not being uncommon.
It is important to recognise this longevity to maintain the desired results and prevent excessive repeat treatments for tear trough injections. The time to repeat the treatment is when the hollowness returns, which may take several years, but is typically a once a year cosmetic procedure.

The HA dermal fillers we use are reversible, therefore should you not like the result or should you develop any complications, the procedure can be reversed. Our fillers are also supported by a strong body of clinical evidence to support their safety and efficacy.
