How Does It Work?

Anti-sweating injections

Excessive sweating can affect any site of the body although the most common locations are the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis), palms of the hands, soles of the feet and the forehead.

This treatment works by injecting a drug which blocks the production of sweat. It is extremely effective, working for up to 95% of people who try it. The effects take a couple of weeks to develop and typically last between 3 and 9 months, before a repeat treatment is required. For many patients this is a seasonal problem, worse in the summer, and so it’s quite common for patients to have this treatment just once per year in the lead up to the hotter months. Other patients who are troubled year round often chose to come more frequently for repeat treatments.

Common Questions

Is everyone suitable for anti-sweating injections?

Not everyone is suitable for anti-sweating injections. This treatment works for what is known as primary hyperhidrosis, which typically starts around puberty and is the same on both sides of the body. If you suffer from secondary hyperhidrosis – which typically happens later in adult life, and can sometimes only effect one side – this is usually related to another condition and the best path is to treat the underlying condition.

Can any area be treated?

The most common site we treat is the underarm area, although we regularly also treat the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

What are the possible side effects?

The biggest concern is a possibility of compensatory sweating elsewhere. For example, we may reduce the sweating under your arms but your back sweats more as a result. This can happen to around 5% of patients who have treatment, although it usually reverts to normal as the treatment wears off.
