How Does It Work?

What can help?

The Volumetric Facelift is a non-surgical approach to full-face rejuvenation – without the associated downtime of a surgical procedure. Drawing upon our advanced injecting techniques and an evolved understanding of the facial ageing process, we use dermal fillers to restore volume in a way that is both understated and utterly undetectable: injecting onto the bone – thus reinforcing a patient’s natural projection – rather than over-volumising the features. The result is a more youthful facial structure that looks refreshed yet natural. Often patients who have had a surgical facelift will also undergo additional volumetric facelift to restore the softness of youth.

Restoring softness

When the face is young, the tissues are soft and supple. The features become more harsh and less appealing with age and loss of fat and bone from the face. Restoring volume helps to reverse the process and restores the softness of youth.

The Procedure: Step-By-Step

Initial Consultation and Facial Analysis
A detailed consultation is essential before any treatment. This step involves analysing the patient’s facial structure, discussing their aesthetic goals, and creating a personalised treatment plan.

Removal of Makeup and Skin Preparation
This is the first step in the actual procedure, involving cleansing the skin to remove makeup and impurities. This step is crucial to prevent any infections and to prepare the skin for injections.

Topical Anesthesia Application (if necessary)
Most modern fillers contain local anaesthetic which numbs as it goes. Occasionally if the patient is very sensitive – or if we are treating a very sensitive area like the lips – we will use some additional topical anaesthetic for maximal comfort.

Using a Cannula to Refine the Filler Placement
A cannula, which is a thin, blunt-tipped tube, is used for the precise placement of fillers. This technique minimises bruising and discomfort and vastly reduces the risk of complications. Although this can look painful on video, most patients aren’t able to feel it at all.

Cheek Filler Placement
Adding volume to the cheeks is a critical step in restoring a youthful appearance. This is a holistic approach the includes the front (or apple), back (in front of the ear) and lower cheek, according to each patients individual anatomy.

Contouring the Jawline
As we age, loss of bone along the jawline contributes to sagging and jowl formation. Defining the jawline is a key aspect of the volumetric facelift, helping to create a more defined and youthful facial contour.

Injections to the Outer Corner of the Eye
This step helps to lift the lower eyelids as part of the volumetric facelift, for a rejuvenated and rested look.

Injections to the Deeper Lines Around the Mouth
We always start by restoring the structure to the face which helps reduce lines around the mouth. However, when the lines are deep they usually also need some direct treatment.

Assessment of Symmetry and Additional Adjustments
After the initial injections, assessing the face for symmetry and balance is important, making any necessary adjustments with additional tweaks.

Post-Procedure Care Instructions
Providing patients with detailed aftercare instructions is crucial. This most important aspect is keeping the skin clean, by avoiding wearing make up in the first 24 hours.

Follow-Up Appointment
A follow-up appointment is often scheduled to assess the results once the swelling has subsided and the fillers have settled. We usually see patients in two weeks, by which point the results should have settled and you should have a good outcome. If any further tweaks are necessary, we can do them at this appointment.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

The Volumetric Facelift addresses one of the most important aspects of facial ageing: loss of volume from the fatty tissues and the skeleton. As the facial bones shrink in size, there is less structural support for the overlying skin and soft tissues, which leads to tissue ptosis (sagging) – manifesting in an aged and tired-looking appearance.

The Volumetric Facelift is very effective at reducing signs of ageing in the face, from the jawline up. The effect is much more modest in the neck. If your neck is a significant effect, you may be better suited to a surgical procedure.

Which anaesthetic is used?

Many of our patients are surprised to learn that the Volumetric Facelift is not uncomfortable and does not require anaesthetic. We use dermal fillers containing a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps reduce discomfort. At the same time, sensitive areas, such as around the mouth, can benefit from using a topical numbing cream. A dental block can be administered for highly nervous patients, though this is rare.

What's the downtime?

Immediately after the volumetric facelift you might notice a small amount of swelling (especially around the chin or in the lips) – although this has usually subsided within a few days. In fact, most patients with the Volumetric Facelift are back to work or their regular daily routine the following day. If bruising does occur, it can be covered with post-procedure makeup – though this should not be applied until the day following treatment.

When will I see results?

The effects are immediately visible: contours are noticeably refined, and the face shape appears youthful. But the best results are to be seen in a couple of week’s time, when the filler has fully integrated with the tissue and the face has settled.
